Determining what you will need for your newborn baby’s layette.
If you are like most new mothers to be, trying to figure out what you will need for your new baby’s clothing and layette can be a daunting task. Of course you also have everyone’s opinion of the matter as well. One thing you should definitely keep in mind is what time of year your baby will be born. What season will it be when you give birth? For example, if it is summer, heavy baby blankets may not be as necessary just yet. Buying clothing in neutral colors like yellow and green are a good idea if you do not know the sex of your baby yet.
Below is a good start to what you could buy to start the baby’s layette:
v Diapers – approximately 350 for your first month if you are using disposable or 4 dozen if you are using cloth
v Cotton mittens for sharp fingernails
v Burping clothes
v 8-10 receiving blankets
v 8-10 pairs of socks or booties
v 7-9 bodysuits, like the Onesies brand. You can never have enough of these.
v 5-6 tee shirts that have side snaps for easy changing
v 2-3 baby gowns with drawstrings at the bottom or sleepers
v 2-3 cotton baby hats
v 2-3 tops/shirts
v 2-3 pants
v 2-3 one piece outfits
v 4-6 baby bibs
v Don’t forget your homecoming outfit!
If your baby is born in the Summer months some good things to have also would include:
v 1 Bathing Suit
v A very lightweight blanket
v A lightweight hat like a sun bonnet
v A lightweight hooded jacket
If your baby is born in the Winter months some good things to have also would include:
v A snowsuit
v A car seat cover to keep the weather off your baby
v 2-3 blanket sleepers
v Possibly a sweater or 2
v Baby hats
v Baby mittens
v Very warm baby blankets
Don’t forget your baby laundry detergent and baby fabric softener to wash your baby’s clothing gently! Washing your baby’s clothing first before he or she arrives is a good idea to remove any irritants that may have unknowingly been at the store.
